Just a quick blog since I’m in the midst of a cake deadline. I just wanted to post a picture of me and the Good Things Utah ladies. They were all so fun and sweet. I completely enjoyed myself and hope to get back there soon. I also wanted to let you know that there is a link to watch the Good Things Utah segment that I was on. This link will take you to the Good Things Utah website with my recipe. If you look over to the right of the recipe and picture of the cupcakes, there is a small window that you can click on to watch the video. Go check it out and then check back here tonight for tips and pictures and fun ideas for throwing your own fairy party!

Today I made an appearance on Good Things Utah. I had a great time. The whole news crew was very friendly and accommodating. I had a lot of fun and was able to announce a new class scheduled at Orson Gygi in Salt Lake City, Utah. It will be a two day class where we will sculpt a fairy using cake, modeling chocolate, advanced structures and much more. If you are interested in learning about how gravity defying cakes are made and being able to make your own, this class is it. For more information, check out my classes page.
For those of you that watched the Segment and want to see more on the fairy garden cupcakes that I demonstrated, I will have a blog about it coming out hopefully tomorrow.

Yesterday I was a guest instructor at Bridgerland Applied Technology College. It was a fun day. I was able to go and talk to the students and tell them my story and teach them a few things. My goal was to open their eyes to the cake decorating world and show them what can be done with cake, (it’s not just flour, sugar, and butter) and also show them how fun it can be. I think I was successful in that aspect. I hope the students enjoyed the class. I know I did. And a fun bonus was that they did a write-up on the class and put it on the front page of their website. So, If you want to hear more about the class, or if you want to see pictures, you can go check out the article on the BATC website.

Back in 2009, I did an interview with Tessa Wolf from Utah Bride and Groom about my Love Letters cake that won third runner up at the national wedding cake competition. So, I knew that there would be an article about it but I didn’t know when it would come out. I checked a few times and then forgot about it. Well, today I ran across the article that was posted in May of 2009. I’ve blogged about all of the other media attention that I have received for my work, so even though this is really old, I wanted to post it. You can go here to read the article.

I promised pictures for the next few postings, but a picture of the cover of the July issue of Cake Central Magazine will have to do for now. If you subscribe to the Cake Central Magazine, it should be arriving soon (if you haven’t already received it). So, while you’re thumbing through the pictures of all of the beautiful cakes, check out pages 36 and 37. I have my own take on a tattoo cake. It was a pretty fun cake to make. Not your typical Utah wedding cake.

This cover picture is a cake made by Kasey Lackey of The People’s Cake.

Kerry Vincent posted this on Facebook today and I thought it was fun to see another news segment that displayed my cake. So I thought I would share it. It’s about the Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show in 2008, the year that I made the Love Letters cake. This cake took 3rd runner up. You can see it here.

I am excited to announce that I will be doing a segment on Good Things Utah. I love doing news segments. It’s like teaching a whole bunch of people in just a few minutes. And I love teaching and sharing new things. It’s a couple months away, so I will post about it when the time gets closer so that all of my Utah readers can set your DVRs and TVo’s.

Every once in a while, I Google my name to see what comes up. Well, I found something today that I didn’t know about. There was an article written about me on Cache Valley Daily that I was not aware of. It was written back in March and talked about a Logan, Utah cake decorator (me) and her Ultimate Cake Off debut. I though it was a fun find. It’s fun to know that you’re being talked about (in a good way of course). Here’s the link to Cache Valley Daily.

Chances are that you have heard about Cake Centrals new magazine. The first issue came out last month featuring Kerry Vincent on the cover, and sold out quickly. The second issue is on it’s way out and will feature a cake of mine in the Trend section. I’m excited to see the magazine and I love the cake that I made. I hope you all get a chance to see it. If you don’t have a subscription to the magazine and would like one, or if you just want to purchase the second issue, you can go to Cake Central Magazine for more information.

Second Issue of Cake Central Magazine. Cake on cover by Ron Ben-Israel.
Correction: The second issue that is out now with Ron Ben-Israel’s cake on the cover is NOT the issue that my cake will be in. Mine will be in the next issue. This is the cover. It will be in the “Tie the Knot” section. Sorry for the confusion.

I heard the news this morning about a very prominent cake decorating company in Chicago. Mary and Brenda Maher, the owners of Cake Girls, lost their business in a fire last night. If you watch Food Network Challenge or We’s Amazing Wedding Cakes, you probably know who these talented sisters are. They have made a big name for themselves and have run a very successful business.
Even though I don’t know them personally, I feel so bad for their loss. A fire would have to be such a devastating thing. Being a family business, I’m sure they have lost so many valuable things. The tools and building that were lost are replaceable, but I’m sure there is a lot of book keeping and information that they have lost that won’t be recoverable. It is a good reminder for small businesses to keep copies of their information off site. For me, this is definitely a place for improvement.
From what I hear, the building that burned down was not only their business. It was also a home for several residents. My heart goes out to all of those that have been affected by this disaster and I hope that everyone can have the things that they need to get back on their feet.
